Whose Jerusalem ?

Whose Jerusalem ?

A Time of Tribulation

In the Olivet Discourse, just two days before His impending crucifixion, Jesus told His disciples that one of the signs of "the end of the age" would he "great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world" (Matthew 24:21). Scientists today, from observing the creation, conclude that problems for mankind are multiplying beyond man's control. The occult has come up with the counterfeit new age movement," trying to find unity and peace for mankind, without God.

In addition to this "Sign," Jesus told His disciples two other conditions that would have to prevail before His return: the preaching of the gospel "unto all nations" (Matthew 24:14), and the reappearance of the Israelites in the Promised Land, in sovereign control of Jerusalem (Luke 21:24); ready to accept Him "whom they have pierced" (Zechariah 12:10).

It is also obvious from Zechariah's prophecies that the nations will totally oppose all these events, but especially the issue of Jerusalem.

"Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling to all the people round about.. .in the siege against Judah and Jerusalem... .I will make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces... though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it (Zechariah 12:2-3)... .in that day I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem (Zechariah 12:9). ...For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle (Zechariah 14:2). ...Then shall the Lord fight against those nations (Zecharian 14:3); and his (Messiah's) feet shall stand in that day upon the Mount of Olives (Zechariah 14:4)... .and the Lord shall be king over all the earth; in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one" (Zechariah 14:9).

The prophet Joel adds some details: "I will also gather all nations, and bring them down into the Valley of Jehoshaphat and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations and parted my land" (Joel 3:2).

North of Jerusalem and west of Galilee there stands a lush wide valley; the site of ancient Megiddo, from which comes the apocalyptic name "Armageddon."
Many battles have been fought there throughout world history, as the empires of the past clashed over the trade routes joining together three continents.
Britain defeated Turkey here in 1917, ending 400 years of Ottoman domination of the area from 1517 A.D. to 1917 A.D.

We do not know when the nations of the world will so gather in their attempt to settle matters to their liking; but we do know that the Scriptures say that it shall happen, and further say that the issue at stake will be the fact that Israel occupies Jerusalem (Zechariah 12:9).

It is interesting that today in Israel, at the southern end of the Valley of Jehoshaphat, there stands the United Nations complex for the Middle East; and that the hill on which they are located is known in Jewish history and tradition as "the hill of evil counsel."

It was the United Nations in 1947 that passed the "Resolution For the Partition of Palestine," attempting to restrict Jewish occupation to a mere sliver of land; and attempting to internationalize Jerusalem. The stage is being set today by the Almighty to overrule the plans of the nations regarding the Jews, the land and Jerusalem. The nations think they are in charge, but they are not (Psalm 33:10).

The age of the Gentiles and their domineering empires are drawing to a close, and the restoration of God's ancient people and nation to their destined age is at hand. "The set time has come," and truly we can hear the hoofbeats of history as the rebellious nations are being drawn together, in spite of all that sin and rebellion can do to prevent it, to prepare the way for the return of Jesus Christ to earth.

"And his feet shall stand in that day upon the Mount of Olives, which is to the east of Jerusalem; and the Mount of Olives will split in the middle, and half the mountain will move north, and half south... and the Lord thy God shall come, and all the saints with thee" (Zechariah 14:4-5).
