Prime Minister Ariel Sharon announced Wednesday that he is determined to eradicate the Jewish presence from the Gaza Strip by the end of next year.
The Israeli leader said that although he does not have a majority in his government to pass such a decision today, he will ensure that majority is in place by the time the cabinet meets to vote on his Gaza-first retreat initiative in four days' time.
"The plan would be approved on Sunday," he declared, according to The Jerusalem Post.
The paper suggested that Sharon is willing to make the kind of move traditionally practiced by the region's "democratically elected" Arab presidents, and fire those ministers who oppose him, replacing them with yes-men before calling the vote.
If realized, Sharon's plan would mean that less than 40 years after the LORD God of Israel gave His people their miraculous Six Day War victory and brought the Gaza Strip under their control, enabling Jews to once again settle in and bring new life to that land, the country's leadership will try to reverse what He has done.
Under the approving eye of the international community, and as cries of praise descend to Allah from minarets around the world, Jewish soldiers and policemen will uproot thousands of settled Jewish families from their homes and forcefully relocate them to "Israel proper."
While Israeli security and intelligence officials -- apparently for political reasons -- insist that such a withdrawal will reduce terrorism against Israel and strengthen the Jewish state, the past 11 years have shown that Israel's surrender of land to the Palestinian Arabs always and only increases their violence against it.
Repeatedly since 1993, Jerusalem has signed agreements with the "Palestinians" according to which Israel has given them control of more and more land in exchange for the Arabs' same, repeated but never kept, promises to end terrorism and incitement to hatred against the Jews.
Not only for these Arabs, but for all the gentile nations of the world, Israel's submission to their land-for-"peace" demands have communicated the clear message that the world's designation of Israel's historic homeland as "occupied Arab lands" is the correct one; that Israel's claim to those lands has been fraudulent and unjust.
Starting with its withdrawals from Gaza and Jericho in 1993, then from Ramallah, Kalkilya, Shechem, Bethlehem and Hebron, Israel's governments may have wanted to send the world the message that they are sincere in their quest for peace. What the nations have heard, however, are Israel's repeated confessions of its wrongdoing, and its acknowledgement of the righteousness of the international community's demands.
Furthermore, by not only permitting, but actually helping to carry out the ethnic cleansing of Jews from Gaza, (and later, as the Sharon plan, supported by the United States, envisages, from parts of Judea and Samaria), Israel would be lending active support to the establishment of racist, anti-Jewish areas that the world has decided will be the judenrein State of Palestine.
As Sharon pushes ahead, the questions loom ever larger: will he succeed in passing this perverse plan? And, more importantly, if his conveniently modified cabinet agrees to it, will the plan be carried out?
Let it be recorded that for this writer and lover of Israel the answer is a clear and unambiguous, "No!"
Three thousand plus years ago, just a few hundred miles from where I live, Moses reminded God that He had made a promise and a commitment to the Israelites, that He had not brought them out of Egypt just to destroy them in the wilderness. When God was furious with them for their unfaithfulness, Moses pleaded with Him to think about His reputation, which He had so effectively established in the eyes of the Egyptians.
And when He later wanted to do away with them because of their lack of faith to claim the land He had promised them, Moses reminded Him that the nations in that land, who were already afraid of the approaching Israelites' God after hearing of His great and mighty works, would lose their healthy new fear of the Almighty.
So too, as Israel bends and succumbs to the pressure of the world to reverse its restoration to its land, we Christian Zionists remind God today that He has not gathered the Jews back from all the nations among which He scattered them only to see them driven out of their Promised Land once more.
According to His word, He has brought them back and planted them in their land in an act of divine favor, and according to His unchanging plan, never to uproot them again.
For why, as the psalmist says, should those nations who so ferociously and adamantly oppose God's purposes for Israel, say of the re-constituted Jewish nation, "Where, now, is their God?"
As they soon shall discover, Israel's God sits enthroned in the heavens. And He is laughing them to scorn. He will have His way, and when He does, His dearly beloved Israel, and the entire world, will know that He is God.
The United Nations is an enabling institution. It enables John Kerry to babble mindlessly about the situation in Iraq. It enables President Bush to assure Americans that our troops will not remain in Iraq forever. The United Nations also enables terrorists in the Middle East to kill with impunity.
The latest in a long line of U.N.-supported atrocities occurred last month in Israel, where Palestinian Arab terrorists used a U.N. ambulance to do battle with the Israeli military. In Reuters' video footage of the incident, the terrorists can be seen hopping into a U.N. ambulance and driving away in reverse.
According to the Israeli Defense Ministry, the terrorists also used U.N. ambulances to steal body parts of Israeli soldiers killed in a Gaza Strip military operation. It's a common tactic for the Palestinian Arab terrorists; they often hide in ambulances in order to sneak into Israel. Then, when Israel stops ambulances to verify that there are no terrorists aboard, Israel is condemned internationally for hindering medical vehicles.
This incident recalls the brutal kidnapping and murder of three Israeli soldiers on Oct. 7, 2000. The soldiers were patrolling the U.N.-overseen Lebanese border when they were signaled by several U.N. peacekeepers to pull up to the fence. The three soldiers were not suspicious of the peacekeepers -- after all, this area of the border was monitored by U.N. agents, and other U.N. peacekeepers were nearby.
Despite coming under fire, the Israelis continued slowing and approaching the border. Suddenly, a large explosion blew open the border gate, and Hezbollah terrorists, disguised as U.N. peacekeepers in U.N. gear with U.N. vehicles, stormed across the border, spraying bullets, firing shoulder-fired missiles and launching tear-gas grenades. After a few minutes, the three Israelis went down, seriously wounded. Quickly, the terrorists bound and gagged the Israelis, smuggled them across the border, dumped them into two U.N. vehicles and sped away. Five hours later, the U.N. vehicles used in the attacks were recovered, approximately 10 to 12 kilometers from the scene of the kidnapping. The vehicles contained U.N. markings, explosives, Kalashnikov assault rifles, other equipment, and the blood of the wounded Israeli soldiers.
Rumors leaked of a videotape taken by three U.N. personnel the day after the abduction. The videotape was thought to contain footage of the Hezbollah terrorists in U.N. garb with U.N. equipment, stopping U.N. personnel from removing the U.N. vehicles used in the attack. After months of Israeli requests to see the unedited tape, the United Nations finally admitted that a tape did exist but refused to allow Israel to see it unedited. Instead, they blurred out the faces of the Hezbollah terrorists.
The strange behavior of the Israeli soldiers -- continuing to approach the fence even after being fired upon -- led senior Israeli security officials to develop a theory: Hezbollah must have bribed the Indian U.N. peacekeepers, and those peacekeepers took an active role in the abduction of the Israeli soldiers, luring them close to the border. Hezbollah bribery would also explain the use of U.N. materials in the raid. With the theory in hand, Israel asked the United Nations to conduct in internal investigation of the Indian peacekeepers.
U.N. officials immediately dismissed the theory. "This is the most illogical theory, based on pure speculation and obvious lack of information as to what happened," ranted Timur Goksel, spokesman for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. "Such a theory is nothing but a pathetic lie, and I regret very much that it has been aired." An internal U.N. investigation of the peacekeepers revealed nothing.
The U.S. House Middle East Subcommittee held a hearing on the deaths of the three Israeli soldiers. The chair of the subcommittee, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Florida), ripped the United Nations for aiding the Hezbollah terrorists. "The ensuing years have been filled with delays and confusion, all stemming from the United Nations," she said. "Time and time again, the Israeli government requested information available to the United Nations."
The United Nations responded by refusing to send a representative to testify before the subcommittee. "We are unable to send a representative," wrote Catherine O'Neill, a U.N. official, in a letter to Ros-Lehtinen. "In this particular case, the United Nations has shared with the government of Israel and the families, all information in its possession that could have shed light on the condition of the missing soldiers."
If U.N. peacekeepers worked with Hezbollah terrorists, there is no doubt in my mind that they would work hand in glove with Iraqi terrorists and their allies. Why would we expect American soldiers to be treated with more respect than Israeli soldiers by an organization that actively supported the Saddam Hussein regime? Why should we continue to use our tax dollars to support enablers of international Islamic terrorism?
Nick Berg, an American from Philadelphia, was kidnapped and tortuously beheaded by Arabs in Iraq sometime in May. The murderers filmed the deed and proudly displayed the victim's severed head.
After killing six Israeli soldiers in an attack on an armored vehicle in Gaza on May 11, the Arabs near the scene of the carnage gleefully held aloft human body parts in front of rolling cameras. One of the Arab terrorists was later interviewed on film with what appeared to be a human head in front of him.
The week before, after shooting at Tali Hatuel's car, causing it to skid and stop, Arab terrorists walked over to the vehicle to finish the occupants off. They looked at the heavily pregnant mother and her four no-doubt frightened girls; the youngest was two years old. And then shot them all. At point-blank range. With sadistic satisfaction, they systematically murdered Tali Hatuel and her unborn son, as well as all of Tali's daughters - Hila, age 11, Hadar, 9, Roni, 7, and two-year-old Meirav.
In Fallujah in March, crowds of townspeople dragged four American civilians out of their vehicles, shot or beat them to death, mutilated their bodies, dragged them through the streets, suspended them from a bridge and burned them.
And they danced and cheered.
With their children.
In Ramallah in 2000, two Israeli soldiers were kidnapped, beaten, stabbed countless times, had their eyes gouged out, and were literally disemboweled and dismembered by an Arab lynch mob.
The people - and I use the term loosely - who carried out the initial beatings threw one of the victims down to the waiting mob, where his face was further crushed with stones, feet, fists and even a heavy metal window frame. One Jew was set on fire and dragged along the street as Arab onlookers danced and cheered. Some of the butchers celebrated their crimes with the victims' internal organs. One of the killers, famously captured on film, proudly displayed his blood-soaked hands to the cheering Ramallah crowd.
And it gets worse. In 2003, nearly two years later, Arab parents in Gaza cheered again when their little children dressed up as members of the Ramallah lynch mob, complete with hands painted blood red, for a kindergarten graduation ceremony.
According to a report by Dr. Michael Widlanski, an Israeli Arabic expert, the Voice of Palestine called the attack on the Hatuel girls "an act of heroic martyrdom". The targeted children and their mother, the PA radio reported only as "five settlers".
Among the participants at the funerals of the Hatuel family members was President of Israel Moshe Katzav. He said, "This day of blood will be engraved in our history. An earthquake has happened. No one in the world can stand apathetically by in the face of these acts by such evil people. Where are those who speak in the name of Allah?"
National Review contributing editor David Frum posed the same question in his May 12 "Diary" on NRO: "Where are the imams?" he asked.
Some of "those who speak in the name of Allah," Mr. President, were busy sawing Nick Berg's head from his body in Iraq. "Allah is great!" they shouted in triumphal glee as they killed their bound and helpless victim. The imams are in the mosques, Mr. Frum, waving swords and exhorting their followers to behead a Jew: "Allah willing, we will cut off his head! Oh Jews! Allah is great! Allah is great!" They are also in Saudi Arabian palaces, telling their subjects that they are 95% certain Zionists are behind Islamist terrorism. They are also writing for the Arab media, explaining that Jews are behind all the evil in the world. And they are even organizing soccer matches, Mr. President, honoring mass murderers.
This is the enemy. Don't look away.
Perhaps when another rally is held in support of Iraqi "resistance" or "Palestinian liberation" somewhere in the world, counter-protesters can remind the ever-so-sensitive and progressive demonstrators of Nick Berg's scream of pain, or of two-year-old Meirav Hatuel cowering in her car seat, or of the Ramallah or Fallujah savages dancing with human entrails.
During the lynch of the two IDF soldiers who had taken a wrong turn into Ramallah in 2000, one of the Arab murderers paused in his savage beating to answer a cell phone belonging to one of the dying soldiers.
He told the worried voice on the other end of the line, "We are killing your husband."
There is a Talmudic dictum that states, "One who is merciful to the cruel, will ultimately cause cruelty to the merciful."
It seems to me that we, Israelis and Americans, have proven the Talmudic sages absolutely correct. Please, no more mercy.
The European Union and Egyptians have agreed to join forces with Yasser Arafat and his security services to bring peace to the Levant!
And not a moment too soon - I don't think Israel could have survived another day without these parties coming to our rescue.
Let us examine the pedigree of our would-be messiahs.
According to the report in the London-based Dar al-Hayat newspaper, the Egyptians will send 250 'experts' to train the Palestinian security forces, and - in accordance with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plans for Gaza - will be encouraged to assume a "greater role" in Gazan military affairs.
Yes, the Egyptians.
The same Egyptians who have done absolutely nothing to prevent hundreds of tons of weaponry and drugs and hundreds of East European women (sex-slaves) to stream from Egyptian Sinai into Gaza. The same Egyptians, who allow their tightly controlled state media to broadcast and print some of the most poisonous anti-Semitic invective since the Nazis. The same Egyptians whose military annually practices for invasions of the Sinai and who still spend billions of dollars per year preparing for war with Israel.
Yep, these are the guys that Ariel Sharon wants to invite into Gaza.
And he wants to amend the 1979 Camp David Accords with Egypt in order to achieve it. Well, he need not even bother - according to Egypt the pact is null and void anyway, as Foreign Minister Ahmad Maher told his Iranian hosts on January 6, 2004.
If one suspends their disbelief and for even a moment imagines that the Egyptians are not waging a clandestine proxy-war against Israel - which if true should automatically and immediately invalidate any claim that the Egyptians should have any role in Israel's security - why would we want these incompetent fools training the Palestinians?! What could they possibly train the Palestinians in - turning a blind eye? Cooperating with Hamas and Hizbullah? Given events since September 2000, one would think the Palestinians need little training in these fields.
Just for good measure, Sharon may like to invite the Syrians and Iranians too.
To this heavenly mix, Sharon is proposing that the European Union send a crack squad of do-gooders to Gaza. The EU would again be called upon to help train the Palestinian security forces (hmmm, this seems to imply that the Egyptians may not be up to the task...). In practical terms, this may mean that the EU taxpayers are once again asked to fund the acquisition of materiel for the reconstituted Palestinian "security" services.* * I use the term "security" in its broadest possible interpretation, since the Palestinian "security" services have never provided security for anyone except Yasser Arafat. Prior to using their European training to murder Jews, the Palestinian "security" services used it to terrorize and repress the Palestinians.
"Haven't we already done that?" the European taxpayer may ask. The answer is yes, they have. And they are being called upon to do it again because the police stations, APCs and guns purchased last time - during the Olso honeymoon (1993-1996) - have all been (mis)used to murder Israelis, and have thus either been destroyed or captured.
There is something depressingly familiar about inviting the EU to funnel poorly monitored cash into a morally and financially bankrupt society who will then use it to fund terrorism and hate, instead of education, health care or infrastructure.
To invite the EU back into the Palestinian territories one would have to overlook its de facto funding of terrorism over the last decade and its rapacious appetite for viciously criticizing Israel for any violation - real or imagined - of the Oslo Accords while paying no regard to the causal Palestinian violations and atrocities. In its conduct and even in its own polls, Europe has proved itself to be dishonest broker when it comes to the Arab-Israeli conflict. It is not only pro-Arab (no crime in itself), but manifestly anti-Jewish.
Yet, Sharon sees no problem bringing the EU back to mismanage the 'peace process'.
Finally, we come to our peace partners themselves: the Palestinian Arabs, led by a ghastly collection of terrorists. In the blue corner, we have Yasser Arafat, the inventor of modern terrorism. A man who was, remains, and always will be, a terrorist at heart. Arafat has violated every agreement, broken every promise, betrayed every trust and neglected every responsibility he has ever come across. He has done this to the Hashemites, the Syrians, the Lebanese, the Egyptians, the Europeans, the Americans and (of course) the Israelis. He simply cannot be trusted to do anything except murder Jews. There is absolutely no reason why anyone would ever agree to a process that would rehabilitate this unreformed tyrant.
His opposition in the red corner are the enormously popular Hamas and Islamic Jihad organizations, whose undisguised aim is the violent elimination of the State of Israel and its Jewish, Druze and Christian inhabitants.
The audience - the Palestinian people - cannot decide which of these Jew-killers they wish to support, yet they all agree that Israel must die. Literally.
As with the Europeans, the Palestinians too have revealed to us over the course of the last decade (or even longer, if one cares to read the not-so-fine print) their true colors. There are very, very few moderate Palestinians who genuinely want a two-state solution. The overwhelming majority of Palestinian Arabs - as is revealed regularly in their polls - want Israel eliminated. The "moderates" are happy to do this in stages through a "peace process." The "extremists" want to do this immediately through jihad.
Until the Palestinian Arabs genuinely accept a Jewish state in the Middle East, they cannot be trusted with even a water-pistol, let alone another army of 50,000 terrorists in policemen's clothing. Until that day comes, there must be only one security service between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea - the Israeli army.
Inviting the Egyptians, Europeans and current Palestinian leadership to run Gaza is repeating the mistakes of Oslo - which have already cost over 1,000 Israeli lives - and making them worse. With the Israeli Army losing control over Gaza and the Egyptian border, southern Israel would be as vulnerable and as harassed as Kfar Darom or Netzarim. Which 'settlements' would we evacuate then -- Ashkelon?
Only a strong Israeli military presence in Gaza will secure southern Israel - a lesson painfully learnt in 1956, 1967 and 2000-2003. Spare us from the 'second coming' of the Egyptian, European and Palestinian messiahs.
"Who defeated Hitler and saved Europe from fascism? The French? No, the Americans did. We thanked them then because they saved us. Today we criticise them because they're saving somebody else."- Marek Edelman (the last surviving military leader of the heroic Jewish Uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1943).
