The lead article in the May/June ISRAEL REPORT was entitled "WE ARE NOT IN THE POST-ZIONIST ERA"; in spite of what the world media, the nations and even secular-humanist Jewish leaders concluded....prematurely, before the June Israeli election.
While it is true that Zionism has gone through many phases, it is not dead; because not only "the Return" of the Jewish people is involved, but their very salvation. Even further, the rule over the ungodly nations will be climaxed eventually by the fulfilment of God's "Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion" (Ps.2:6)
Nineteen centuries of exile could not extinguish the dream..... because it is rooted in God's plan for the Salvation of a remnant of mankind; Jew and Gentile.
As A.J. Heschel remarked in his profound book "Israel": "When the Moors were driven out of Spain they left the land forever, but when the Jews were driven out and no longer dwelled in the Holy Land, the land continued to dwell in them."
The anguish of the Babylonian Captivity, some 586 years before the birth of Jesus, is immortalized by Psalm 137 thus:
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yeaThere it is ! The destiny of the Jews, Jerusalem, and their enemies.
we wept,when we remembered Zion.
We hanged our harps upon the willows
in the midst thereof. For there, they that carried us
away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us
required of us mirth, saying Sing us one of the songs of Zion.
How shall we sing the LORD'S song in a strange land?
If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her
cunning. If I do not remember thee let my tongue cleave to
the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.
Remember, O LORD, the children of Edom in the day of
Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundations thereof.
O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy
shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou has served us.
Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones
against the stones.
Perhaps we read it too fast; the pathos of God and the Jews is in the words...and between the lines if meditated on in the Spirit.
No, Labour Zionism was not the last gasp of Zionism, but rather the last gasp of bankrupt secular-humanism which the ultra Socialist Jews brought with them from Eastern Europe. At least the Kibbutzim Jews were practical enough to be land conscious; but the defeated Labour government under Peres in particular were deceived dreamers.
If the Jewish people ever needed a Land, they need it today; and tomorrow, for God reminds them through Jeremiah:
"the days come, saith the LORD, that it shall no more be said: the LORD liveth that brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt; but the LORD liveth that brought the children of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the lands where he had driven them: and I will bring them again into their land that I gave unto their fathers. The Messianic Zionism about to come, will be the real Zionism, when they:
Behold, I will send for many fishers, and they shall fish for them; and after I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt for them on every mountain, and on every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks" (Jeremiah 16:14-16).
"see him whom they pierced....
and they shall mourn as for an only son !
