The Jewish Agency reported on Sunday a 35 percent increase in immigration
to Israel in 1999 compared to the previous year, (HA'ARETZ) reported.
According to the report, 77,921 immigrants arrived in Israel during 1999,
while only 58,430 arrived in 1998. Approximately one million individuals
have immigrated to Israel during the past decade, mostly from the former
Soviet Union. The year 1999 also marked an increase in immigration from
Argentina, attributed to poor economic conditions in the country. The
Jewish Agency intends to increase its financial and educational support
to Jews in Argentina.
