The LORD Still Makes a Difference Between The World And Israel

by Alan Lazerte

Chapter 11 of Exodus describes the tenth, and final, plague against Pharaoh's Egypt ; death of the firstborn, both man and beast. But for God's people Israel, chosen to bring Salvation to a sin filled world, their destiny is different; and no one, and nothing, can permanently stand in the way.

"But against none of the children of Israel shall a dog move its tongue, against man or beast, that you may know that the LORD does make a difference between the Egyptians and Israel." (Exodus 11:7)

Nor was it done in secret, but "in the sight of Pharaoh's servants and in the sight of the people " (Exodus 11:3). How humiliating to Pharaoh ! Thus, in one final mighty blow, after giving Pharaoh many merciful warnings to cease from being an obstacle to God's plan of Salvation for mankind, did God remove "the mountain" (Zechariah 4: 6,7) Pharaoh's Egypt. The Holy One had promised to destroy "all the God's of Egypt" (Exodus 12:12), and that He did, including Pharaoh who demanded worship as if God himself. And there were long-term consequences too: Egypt would, by Divine decree, never again rule over the nations.

Psalm 2 is a Divine view of the hostility of the nations collectively against God's will for Israel, which in turn was to bring Salvation to the nations: "and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed" (Genesis 12:3) But the rulers and establishments of this world system do not, like Pharaoh, desire the will of God. Like Nimrod and the people at the post-flood "Tower of Babel" , they want to build a future without reference to God's will for mankind..

The article "Countries Eligible To Sit On The UN Security Council", contained in this issue of the ISRAEL REPORT, points out the shocking fact that only Israel, of the 185 member countries, is ineligible to serve on the UN Security Council, the key deliberative group of the world body; or for that matter to the other most important bodies of the UN system (such as the Economic & Social Council, the World Court, and the Commission of Human Rights).

But God, not the UN, is in charge ! And the nations and their UN, like Egypt's Pharaoh, will eventually have to face, and be dealt with by, "the God of all flesh". Some theology puts the Devil in charge of world affairs, but God has drawn a circle around evil.

Can it be that God will soon, again, as at the Flood, at the Tower of Babel, at Sodom and Gomorrah, and in Egypt, "in the presence of the people" stop warning the nations and move to fulfill His promise and commitment:

" I will gather all nations to battle against Jerusalem....then the LORD will go forth and fight against those nations....And this shall be the plague with which the LORD will strike all the people who fight against Jerusalem...." (Zechariah Chapter 14)
